"The shadowing scheme proved to be a great insight into how a district judge deliberates on civil and family matters and Judge Newman was excellent at taking the time to explain both the process and the reasoning behind his decisions."

District judge shadowing scheme

Lots of our members are getting involved, this is what they told us:-

"I attended the shadowing scheme last Thursday and just wanted to say thank you for such a brilliant opportunity.

I had a really enjoyable day and DJ Newman was very friendly and insightful. Not only did he go through each of the day’s cases with me prior to the hearings he also went through the whole Court process- from how Orders are produced/ signed off to what paper work or ‘Box Work’ he has to deal with on a daily basis. I found the day particularly in valuable as DJ Newman also spoke in depth about his decisions and the thought process behind the decisions he had made.

Not only was it interesting to see a range of cases from simple quantum disputes to urgent children act applications I also very much appreciated what went on ‘behind the scenes’ in terms of processing orders etc. Although the processing and box work side of things may sound slightly boring, as someone who has to deal with the Court day in day out, it was very insightful to see the Court process first hand and gain a true understanding of what happens there- not only in the Court room but also behind the scenes.

I really do think that all legal professionals should take the opportunity to spend a day with a Judge as it does give an excellent insight not only to the workings of the Court but also the way in which a Judge works and the decisions he makes.

I just wanted to thank you again for such an invaluable opportunity."
